ORION CHARTERS - HALIBUT DERBY FISHING

  The Valdez  halibut derby generally runs from Memorial day weekend to Labor day weekend.  The three largest overall halibut weighed-in receive cash prizes of 15k, 5k, and 2k.  The two biggest halibut each week also get prizes. There is a mini derby called the "Halibut Hulabaloo", with a $1000 cash prize.  Also, each person that buys a derby ticket is entered in a drawing for $10,000 cash.  Derby tickets cost $10.

 The Valdez Fish Derby is a non-profit organization that promotes sport fishing in Valdez.  The Derby commitee and Derby clerks are all volunteers. 100% of the money from derby ticket sales goes to prizes.  We encourage our customers to participate in the Valdez Fish Derbies.   The more people that fish in the derby, the more money will be awarded as prizes.  The greater the prizes the more people that will participate which encourages sponsors to donate cash and prizes.

It is always exciting when the boat is bringing in a big fish that will potentially place on the leader board or top the current leader. After the initial fight and landing of a big halibut, the speculation of how much the fish will weigh on the certified derby scale is on everyone's mind.  The competition associated with the $15,000.00 first place derby prize increases the quality and intensity of all of the participating charters. This results in many very high quality fishing charters in Valdez.
